The Kalmeter Journal
The Journal of a visit to Cornwall, Devon and Somerset in 1724-25

translated from the Swedish by Justin Brooke

Of all the Swedes who visited the United Kingdom to study our industry and economy in the early eighteenth century, none could measure up to Henric Kalmeter (1693-1750). His journal is an unrivalled record of industrial practices and customs, in particular his notes on the mining and production of copper, tin, lead and calamine. He also covers the wool trade of the south west, imports of iron and timber, and slate quarrying, all in acutely observed detail.

This first full translation has been made by Justin Brooke, who combines a mastery of the Swedish language with an extensive knowledge of Cornish mining. The work pushes back the boundaries of our knowledge of the industries of the south west to the eve of the industrial revolution.

The illustrations are as contemporary as could be found, and the book is fully indexed by mines, wool trade and names.
