The Plynlimon & Hafan Tramway

by E. A. Wade

One of the most obscure of Welsh narrow gauge railways, the Plynlimon & Hafan Tramway was the result of one man's attempt to exploit the mineral resources of the Leri valley; lead mines and stone quarries. Alas, the mineral wealth proved largely illusory and without its raison d'etre the line soon ceased to be. It had lasted a bare two years but in this short time it had established a passenger service and left its mark on Welsh railway history.

One unique locomotive may have been a technical first for the UK while another lasted another quarter century, ending in Great Western Railway ownership. Although much rebuilt some of the wagons still survive in service on the Vale of Rheidol Railway.

Ted Wade's book brings together all that is known about this intriguing railway from a range of little known sources. It was first published in 1976, rapidly went out of print and became a collectors item. This edition updates the story and makes available again the author's superb scale drawings of the locomotives and rolling stock.
