From 'The Steam Locomotives of the Mersey And Mersey Electric Railways': 2-6-2T No. 13 Brunlees lets off a little steam at Birkenhead Central. The crews had a reputation for looking after their machines and No. 13 shows why, as she positively gleams for the camera. Footplate conditions for the crews in the tunnels cannot have been easy although, perversely, the lack of a cab might actually have helped rather than worsened the problem, because smoke would not have been trapped inside the confined space a cab would create.
