A Journal for British Railway History

Now firmly established as the journal for British Railway history, with a strong leaning towards the pre-Grouping era, Railway Archive is a high quality publication all you have come to expect from Lightmoor Press and Black Dwarf Publications which, because of its 80 pages per issue size, has the space to cover subjects in great depth.

Railway Archive is very much picture driven and each issue features superb selection of historic photographs. The range of articles presented so far includes line histories, with plenty of maps, plans and other illustrative material, lines featuring so far including Leicester to Rugby, Londonderry to Strabane, King's Heath to Moseley, the Mersey Railway and the Lee-on-the-Solent branch.

Locomotive class histories featured so far include the NER Tennant 2-4-0s, the steam locos of the Mersey Railway, the Port Talbot Railway's American 0-8-2 tanks and the L&SWR's Drummond 4-6-0s, each of which are presented with a good range of photographs backed up with detailed, in depth texts.

On the civil engineering side, we have published several major articles including the building and opening of the GWR's Birmingham Moor Street terminus (1894-1916), the Midland Railway's programme of viaduct replacement in the 1880s and the bridges on the Midland's new Chapeltown branch between Sheffield and Barnsley. We have also just completed, with Issue 10, a 4-part history of the North Staffordshire Railway's Locomotive & Carriage Works at Stoke.

Major photographic collections featured include an ongoing series listing the entire output of E. Pouteau, well over 4,000 entries and largely pre-1910; the Roberts Collection, which is heavy on the South Eastern but also includes L&SWR and GNR sections, all circa 1890-5; the Cambrian Railways photographs of H.W. Burman; and a regular series on railway postcards of particular counties, which mostly falls into the period 1905-25.

Other interesting subjects featured include Painting Victorian Trains (about the composition of early paint ALL railway modellers should read this!), Newport in broad gauge days, Manson's Tablet Exchange Apparatus on the Highland Railway, the Flying Scotsman Cartel (an agreement between the L&NER and the LM&S to 'slow down' their crack expresses), the influence of US railway operating practice on the NER around the turn of the century, and the transport of Gas by Rail.

Well known railway authors and historians who have so far contributed to our pages include Mike Christensen, Basil Jeuda, Stanley Jenkins, Alan A. Jackson, John Alsop, Stephen Barnfield, Phil Coutanche, Dr Tony East, Peter Swift, T.B. Maund, Peter Treloar, Pete Fidczuk, Sandy Mullay, John Teasdale, and Bob Essery.

Each issue is 80 pages of articles and illustrations the only adverts are for BDL's own publications on the inside covers, whilst the outside covers are in full colour. With many issues now published why not dip into one and see what you can find of particular interest to you and, at the same time, see how the UK's newest railway journal has come of age and is building into a superb archive of British Railway history.
